Traditionally, a short period of non-tango music, a "cortina," is played between sets ("tandas") of tangos during a "milonga" (Argentine tango social dance). The cortina tells the dancers that the tanda has ended. Generally, the dance floor clears during the cortina as dancers head off to seek new partners for the following tanda. At many of our milongas, we expand the concept of cortinas by bringing excellent jazz musicians to play for short periods between each set. We have even designated an official jazz pianist of the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School. His name is Wataru Niimori; he's an extraordinary pianist; and you can learn more about him here. | |||||||
